Subject overview

Our art and design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As pupils progress, we equip them with the skills needed to think critically, which in turn helps them to develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

They become increasingly competent in considering the societal impact of art, reflecting upon how art and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Key Stage 3 overview

We follow the national curriculum for art and design at Key Stage 3.

Our young people will be taught to develop their creativity and ideas, and increase proficiency in their execution. They will develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers, expressing reasoned judgments that can inform their own work.

Year 7

Skills School	Cultural Pattern	Birds
This project is extremely important as students' experience of art and design can really vary in different primary schools, so this allows us to get a good baseline of individual experiences and skillsets. Skills and Knowledge: During this project, students will be introduced to the world of art and design and will explore the idea of art movements, the formal elements, colour theory. Students will learn basic art techniques such as: creating tone, colour blending, painting skills, colour mixing, how to shade 3d forms to use line to create texture and pattern.	Skills and Knowledge: During this project, students will be introduced to the artwork of two different cultures. Nigerian art Hindu art. During the first stage of the project, learners will explore the artwork of contemporary Nigerian artist Laolu and will explore Nigerian pattern and mark making. In the second stage of the project, students will explore Hindu pattern, and will develop their design skills to design a decorative mandala design. Pupils will learn how to use the wax resist technique and develop their mixed media skills.	Skills and Knowledge: During this project, students will analyse and evaluate the work of contemporary artists Kelly Stanford and Lucy Arnold Students will explore and develop their mark making skills through sgraffito, and will practice their drawing skills by completing a series of observations. Students will create their own response to the artist's work, by designing and creating a 3D mini beast.

Year 8

Hundertwasser	Doodle Art	Pop Art Portraits
*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will be introduced to the artwork of Hundertwasser and will be introduced to unconventional architecture. Students will develop their design skills and will learn how to make a clay tile using basic clay techniques. They will learn how to use clay sculpting and mark making tools and slip. Pupils will be introduced to the crayon and Indian ink resist method of colouring clay.	*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will be introduced to the contemporary art trend of Doodle Art. They will engage with the artwork of Vexx and will explore contemporary craft makers and fabric stuffies on Etsy. Students will design and create a fabric stuffie, developing their fabric painting and stitching skills. ·	*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will be introduced to the Pop Art movement, in particular, the artwork of famous Pop Artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. They will learn about portraiture including how to draw facial features and the proportion of the face. Students will experiment with paint and mixed media techniques to create two original portraits in the style of Pop Art.

Year 9

Robots	Under the Sea	Sweet Treats
*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will analyse and evaluate the work of mixed media Pop artist Eduardo Paulozzi and cardboard sculpture Grey Olijynk. Students will explore and develop their skills in the mediums of: o pen, o pencil, o pencil crayon o cardboard. Students will create their own responses to the artists' work by designing and creating a 3D cardboard robot	*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will be introduced to the textile technique of Indonesian batik. They will look at the contemporary batik artist Kay Shaffer and explore: o hot wax, o crayon batik o stitching and embellishment techniques. Pupils will follow the design process of designing and sampling to design a bag inspired by the theme of Under the Sea. Students will apply their understanding to create an original bag final piece.	*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will analyse and evaluate the work of collage artist Nancy Standlee. Students will explore and develop their skills in the mediums of: o collage, pen, o pencil, o pencil crayon o cardboard. Students will create their own responses to the artists' work by designing and creating: o a collage and a 3d clay cupcake.

Key Stage 4 overview

For students who wish to continue their art and design education, we offer two possible courses at Key Stage 4.. Both are GCSE qualifications in Art and Design, though one course focuses on Fine Art. while the other is a Photography specialism.

While both options offer an excellent grounding to prepare students for future art and design study, they are also an excellent choice for students who enjoy being creative or for those who want to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and creativity.

Kay Stage 4 GCSE - Art, Craft and Design

In this course students will explore their ideas and create their own artwork in response to a theme. They will develop their skills and understanding in a wide range of media and techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed-media and print making.

Year 10

Day of the Dead	Urban Manchester
*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will learn about the Mexican Day of the Dead Festival. They will engage with a range of artists both historical and contemporary. Pupils will apply their knowledge of the Day of the Dead festival and artists including Paul Alexander Thornton to design an original final piece design on wood using mixed media.	During this project, students will broaden their knowledge of the city of Manchester. They will consider all the aspects of the city including fashion, music, architecture, street art, history and famous Mancunians. They will combine their research and ideas about Manchester with their artist research to create an independent final textile piece. Students will be encouraged to show independence in their choice of artwork and direction.

Year 11

Key Stage 4 GCSE - Photography

This course has a narrower focus than the Fine Art course, focusing solely on Photography. In this course students will explore their ideas and create their own photographs in response to a theme. They will develop their analytical and digital photography skills through exploring a range of different areas of photography such as still life photography, studio photography, experimental photography, location photography and portrait/fashion photography.

Year 10

Skills School: Photography skills and experimental photography	Naturally abstract
*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will look at key skills within photography and will link these to artists to develop their skills further. Students will explore and develop their skills in the techniques of: o Rule of thirds, o Aperture, o Focal points, o Leading Lines, o Photoshop skills, Students will create their own responses to the artist's work by analysing the artist's style and by completing artist studies and edits in the style of the artist. Artists: o Slinkachu, o Catherine Yass, o Sam Safoy, o Catherine Yass o Tigran Tsitoghdzyn	*Skills and Knowledge:* During this project, students will look at a number of photographers who focus on natural forms. They will continue to explore and develop their skills in using DSLR cameras and photoshop building in complexity since the previous projects. ·They will create their own response to the artists work by analysing the artist's style through artist studies and editing their own photos in the artist's style. Skills and Knowledge:

During this project, students will be introduced to, and explore, a number of photographers who focus on urban photography.

They will visit Manchester for a location photoshoot.

They will work independently to select and respond to artists' work.
Pupils will explore and develop their skills in using the DSLR camera and will build on the skills learnt so far.
They will build upon and develop new photoshop editing skills.
Pupils will create their own responses to the artists' work by taking their own photos and editing them in the style of the artists.
